A demonstration-cum-lecture session was organised under the auspices of Bioved Research Institute of Agriculture and Technology on October 7, 2012. The session was marked by the visit of N Krishnan, CGM, NABARD.

During his address, Krishnan said, "Value addition in various agricultural produce as well as the products of allied agricultural activities holds the key." He added that a network of subsidiary occupations should enhance the income of the rural families and highlighted the role of non-farm sector to strengthen the economic scenario of the rural folk. It is necessary to check the forced out migration of rural poor to the urban centres.

He opined that a massive programme for cereal, vegetable and fruit processing along with the processing of medicinal and aromatic plants was now very important. Processing is urgently required to process the minor forest produce to augment the income of forest dwellers. In this context, he praised the efforts of Bioved.

Dr B B Tripathi, principal, ADC, during his presidential address, said, "Big push is necessary to mitigate the distress and misery of the farming community. A value addition programme for various types of coarse cereals being produced in various parts of the country is needed." Cultivation of coarse cereals is economically viable in various agro-climatic zones of the country.

Dr B K Dwivedi, director, Bioved Research Institute of Agriculture and Technology, said that research and innovation input could play a major role for value addition for the various products of agricultural and allied activities.

The event was attended by a number of NGOs (non-governmental organisations) mainly Social Welfare Society, Bioved Research Society, Sadbhawna Sewa Sansthan, Pragti Gram Udyog Sanasthan, Sewa Sansthan, UP Gramin Vikas Sansthan, Bal Evam Mahila Kalyana Samiti, C G. Sewa Sansthan, Suraj Samaj Kalyan Sansthan, Sneh Welfare and Educational Society, Hemchandra Gupta Memorial Social Welfare Society, and Jagat Kala Welfare Society working for rural and agricultural development under the support and supervision of NABARD.
