Cibus 2012, Italy's biggest F&B show, opens with mega displays, innovations

CIBUS 2012, the 16th edition of one of the biggest international food & beverage exhibitions held in Italy, threw open its doors as Mario Catania, minister of agriculture,Government of Italy, inaugurated it at Fiere di Parma, here on Monday. The fair will be on till May 10, 2012.

With some 2,300 exhibitors from all over the world in participation, this year"s show has on offer innovations such as Venditalia Self Expo, MicroMalto; Cibus Frozen and a seminar on evolution of retail formats. That apart, the highlight of the show are stalls by dairy product manufacturers, especially cheese companies, with huge offerings of popular names such as Parmareggio and Grana Padano.

The show also offers a rich programme of conferences, focussing on new international markets, the common purpose of the entire food chain, and the collaboration between industry and retailers. On May 8, a presentation by EFSA (Europe Food Safety Agency) is scheduled.



There are many new products on display at Cibus: Barilla Ready Mills (pasta with Italian recipes cooked in a microwave oven), chiccolat scotti (vegetable organic drink), Eurovo Eggy instant mousse for desserts and sweet and salted preparations, La Contadina PDO lactose-free mozzarella, gluten-free baked corn balls, Melinda apple bars with chocolate and cereals, Lou Blau blue cheese made with vegetable rennet with Halal certification, Pineta mineral water and so on.

At the inauguration, Franco Boni, chairman, Fiere di Parma, said, "That the main goal of the food industry is penetrating new foreign markets, we doubled our efforts for attracting buyers and players from the most interesting countries. Visitors could benefit from a 120,000 sq m, fully renewed fairground, with a big parking area, about 2.300 exhibiting companies and a lot of news."

During the three days, the show is also going to see participation by many star chefs - Gianfranco Vissani, Davide Oldani, Antonella Ricci, Vinod Sookar, Fabrizio Ferrari, Alberto Rossetti, Monica Bianchessi, Mattia Poggi, Simone Rugiati, Chiara Maci, Moreno Cedroni and Nicola D'Alonzo. The exhibition also includes real performances with the costumes of the 19th century at La Fabbrica della Pasta booth, and theatre pieces revisited at the Milk&Chocolate Theatre of N.1 Elena e Adolfo Medeghini, with adaptation of texts by Achille Campanile and Karl Valentin.

Indeed the show is huge and different in all respects. Jackie, import manager, Shanghai Kingfoods Condiment Co Ltd, summed it up, well, "The show is huge and beautiful. I have come to source cheese as we, in China, have a good demand for cheese. I think my purpose will be served."
