Cibus 2012 starts in Parma on May 7; will promote 'Made in Italy' food globally
Monday, 16 April, 2012, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Cibus 2012, Europe's third international food exhibition, will be held at the renovated Fiere di Parma in Parma, Italy, between May 7 and 10, 2012. This is the 16th edition of the exhibition. This year's event will cover an area of over 1,20,000 sq m.

Concern for the environment is evident at the venue too – the halls are covered by a photovoltaic system capable of generating seven megawatt and contributing every year to reduce the carbon footprint for over 3,600 tons of carbon dioxide.

This year, the seminars and round tables will revolve around food and retail. One of the highlights of the event is the Cibus Global Awards ceremony, where the best international traders in authentic made in Italy foods will be honoured.

Alma, an international school of Italian cuisine, will set up Alma Caseus, to recognise the best Italian cheese and dairy professionals.

The number of exhibitors has increased this year, reflecting the changing trends in Italian food production. While most industries have been hit by the economic downturn, the Italian food sector seems to be growing.

In fact, food exports from Italy have gone up by more than 10 per cent in the last couple of years, and now account for 23 billion euro. Imports, on the other hand, account for about 18.6 billion euro; an increase of 10 per cent compared to 2010.

Wine exports registered a 13 per cent increase; Grana Pradano and Parmigiano exports rose by 16 per cent, and pasta and olive oil showed a seven per cent increase. The global turnover of the Italian food sector is up by over 20 per cent.

The ready-to-cook (RTC) and ready-to-eat (RTE) segments have shown a ten per cent growth with respect to 2010. These segments produce in excess of 100,000 tons of products.

Italy is among the world's leading nations in organic food production. More than 50,000 producers are involved in its production, and over a million acres of land is dedicated to the cultivation of organic foods, such as cereals, olives, vines and fruit.

Most of the emphasis will be on typical Italian products such as meat (especially salami); dairy products and tomatoes. The Italian Association of Geographical Indication Consortia (AICIG) is organising a Piazza of PDO and PGI products in collaboration with the Government's Agriculture Cabinet.

At this year's event, one can expect to see a number of innovations. Prominent among them will be CIBUS Frozen; MicroMalto (displaying craft-made beer manufacturers), and Venditalia Self Expo, where automated stores will be presented as retail partners.

The organisers are committed to making it an international event. The CIBUS Export Desk supports the arrival of buyers and category managers from the European market, particularly Germany, the UK and Russia, in Parma.

At the last edition of the event, the relationship between the US market and Italian food products was evident. Earlier, Italian foods were a niche category in the US retail space, but now it is a leading ethnic product category there.

In fact, for years, Cibus has educated American buyers to differentiate between products that sound Italian and those that are authentic Italian (namely original Made in Italy products that merge high quality, healthy ingredients and fair prices).

It also has a presence in social media, such as Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/CibusParma or simply @CibusParma); Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/CibusParma), and Linkedin (http://www.linkedin.com/groups?about=&gid=4271609).
