Zomato unveils 100% tamper-proof pkg to ensure food safety and hygiene

In an ongoing endeavour towards ensuring better food for more people, Zomato has introduced Zomato Safely Sealed , 100 per cent tamper-proof packaging, to add an extra layer of safety to food deliveries.

Zomato Safely Sealed comes in two variations to fit differently-sized boxes. The versatility of the packaging design allows for efficient utilisation of the space, and the transparent body allows users to check the packaging of the food.

The safety seals are made from a single material polymer with 50-micron thickness, and are completely reusable/recyclable. Zomato will soon launch the biodegradable versions of the packaging as well.

During the first phase, this tamper-proof packaging is being implemented across 10 cities in India (Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Nagpur and Vadodara), and will be steadily introduced across all the 180+ cities where Zomato’s online ordering and food delivery services are present.

This packaging will be 100 per cent tamper-proof — once the food is sealed by the restaurant, the packet can only be opened by cutting off the top-end strip. The platform advises its users to not only not accept the delivery if the safety seal is open, but also highlight it to them through their multiple communication channels.

Announcing the development on the company blog, Mohit Gupta, chief executive officer, food delivery, Zomato, said, “Our commitment to ensuring safe and hygienic food reaching our users involves our contribution at every possible step — from supplying ingredients through Hyperpure, to safety audits through Food Hygiene Ratings.”

“Zomato Safely Sealed is our latest attempt at adding an extra layer of safety, ensuring our users receive food as good as it was when it was prepared in the kitchen. We ran a pilot for this initiative among 40 restaurants in Gurugram, and received an overwhelming response from both participating restaurants and users,” he added.

“Today, over 5,000 restaurant partners are sealing their food using the packaging. This makes for about 25 per cent of our order volume in the 10 cities. We have already deployed over three million packets so far, and aims to boost our supply to 3X by April, as we introduce this packaging across 25 more cities in India,” Gupta said.

Zomato will also feature a 100 per cent safely sealed badge on the app for all restaurants who sign up to use the packaging, further educating users in the decision-making process when ordering food online.

Tamper-proof packaging also witnessed tremendous participation from the restaurant community, who welcomed this move, helping them provide better services to their customers.

“We always strive to provide the best quality food to customers ordering online and we depend on the food aggregators to make sure it reaches the same way to the customers. This new initiative by Zomato launching tamper-proof packaging, shows how important customers are to them. Our experience of using the packets has been really good. The packaging ensures the safety of our food with the safety seal. Kudos to Zomato for launching such a thoughtful initiative,” said Abdul Rashid, partner, Alkauser.

“The sample tamper-proof packing works really well. The seal makes sure that the food does not get tampered with,” said Sanil Bhatia, founder, Health Nuts.

The food-tech giant has been delisting thousands of restaurants who do not meet the required hygiene standards. They are also actively working towards improving hygiene selection and today, provide hygiene ratings for over 10,000 restaurants.

They are promoting sustainable mobility through last mile delivery via bicycle, and have also been working towards completely adopting biodegradable packaging for food delivery by launching an eco-friendly packing range, comprising bamboo products (which also provides employment to tribal communities), corrugated paper with coatings, and sugarcane bagasse products.

Plans are underway to offer added benefits to restaurants that are shifting to eco-friendly packaging, by providing them with additional marketing visibility and benefits on the platform - app and Web.
