Woolah’s Rare Assam Green Tea wins Great Taste Award

Assam-based tea company Woolah has won a 1-Star Great Taste Award 2026 for its Rare Assam Green Tea at the prestigious Great Taste Awards, organised by the Guild of Fine Food in the UK.
The award-winning tea is distributed in the UK by Xcillency Limited and was recognised following the Great Taste Awards’ rigorous blind-tasting process. Widely regarded as one of the leading food and beverage accreditation programmes, the awards assess products solely on taste, with entries evaluated without branding or packaging.
More than 500 experts, including chefs, food writers, buyers, retailers and other industry professionals, participate in the judging process. For Woolah, the recognition marks a significant milestone while highlighting Assam’s rich tea-growing heritage on the global stage. The Rare Assam Green Tea is made from organically grown whole tea leaves sourced through the company’s Woolah Organic Mission; an initiative aimed at supporting tea growers in transitioning from conventional farming to organic cultivation.
The company works closely with grassroots farming communities and promotes greater participation of women in the tea workforce. Through its green tea range, Woolah also aims to showcase the diversity of Assam’s tea heritage beyond its traditionally renowned black teas.
“This award means a great deal to us because the judges never saw our brand, our packaging or our story—they simply tasted the tea,” said Upamanyu Borkakoty, Founder, Woolah. “A Great Taste star is a highly respected seal of approval and for us, this recognition belongs as much to the tea growers of Assam as it does to our team.”
He added that the recognition reinforces Woolah’s belief that exceptional tea begins with the quality of the soil and the cultivation practices used by farmers. “To see an organically grown green tea from Assam recognised on a global stage is incredibly rewarding,” Borkakoty said.
Founded in Sivasagar, Assam, Woolah has combined traditional tea craftsmanship with product innovation. The company pioneered what it describes as the world’s first bagless tea dip, enabling whole tea leaves to brew freely without conventional tea bags, while maintaining a focus on sustainable tea production and rural livelihoods.
