In a swift humanitarian response to the devastating fire that struck Karail slum on November 25, World Food Programme (WFP) recently distributed emergency food aid to nearly 1,900 affected families now sheltering in temporary camps.
Using the nearby BTCL Girls’ High School as a distribution point, WFP — working alongside the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), Dhaka North City Corporation and community partner Eco Social Development Organization (ESDO) handed out 5-kg cartons of fortified High Energy Biscuits (HEBs) per household.
These ready-to-eat biscuits rich in essential vitamins, minerals, protein, and carbohydrates are designed for emergency use, requiring no cooking or water. According to WFP, each family’s ration is expected to meet around three days of nutritional needs as they cope with the aftermath.
WFP’s involvement highlights the scale of the disaster: the fire razed hundreds of homes and left many people homeless and without basic food or shelter.
Since first operating in Bangladesh in 1974, WFP has provided lifesaving food assistance and resilience-building support to millions, especially during disasters. The HEBs also form a key component of WFP’s long-standing school-feeding initiatives across the country.
In a statement, WFP’s Country Director, Simone Parchment, said the organisation will keep coordinating with authorities and humanitarian partners to monitor evolving needs and stands ready to deliver further aid if required.
As the Karail fire survivors begin to rebuild their lives amidst uncertainty, this timely food assistance offers a vital lifeline ensuring families don’t go hungry while they wait for shelter, support and long-term rehabilitation.
