Vitamin K2 insufficiency in Indian population
Wednesday, 16 February, 2022, 14 : 00 PM [IST]
Our Bureau, Mumbai
Due to the recent discovery of its many biological functions, vitamin K is known as a ‘multitasking' vitamin. The insufficiency of the multitasking vitamin K may result in the development of chronic degenerative conditions, such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, metabolic conditions (diabetes), and neurodegenerative conditions, that ultimately diminish quality of life and shorten the life span.

Due to the growing awareness of the importance of vitamin K nutritional status, Synergia Life sciences undertook an epidemiological study to evaluate serum levels of vitamin K in healthy men and women (n=50) and patients with diabetes (n=209) selected from the Indian population and to assess the average vitamin K content in the indigenous diet of India.

This study evaluated the content of 2 fat-soluble vitamins—vitamin K1 (phylloquinone), and vitamin K2 (menaquinone; specifically, menaquinone-7 [MK-7]) in a variety of Indian staple foods such as Dhokla, Idli, Naan, Yogurt, Cheese, Milk.

Vitamin K1 serum levels in the studied healthy population and the population with diabetes were found to be within the normal range. The serum levels of vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7 in both the healthy sample and the sample of patients with diabetes were found to be in the low range. Moreover, it was also shown that vitamin K2 (MK-7) was absent from or below the limits of detection in all studied foods, whereas the vitamin K1 content varied widely.

Thus, the vitamin K2 content of staple Indian foods and the intake of vitamin K2 from these foods may be insufficient for this vitamin to fulfil its multitasking role in preventing disease and sustaining health in a growing number of people with vitamin K–dependent health conditions including bone and heart health. Based on the results of this study, which indicated low serum levels of vitamin K2 (MK-7) as well as low vitamin K2 levels in the typical Indian diet, the general Indian population could benefit from the consumption of vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7 supplements for providing health benefits.

Moreover, fortification of foods such as health drink powders, fruit juices, bread & biscuits, milk & other dairy products, edible oil etc. with Vitamin K2-7 appears to be a viable strategy for improving vitamin K status in adults and children.

Synergia’s original research has also shown benefits of Vitamin K2-7 in a number of clinical applications beyond bone and heart health such as peripheral neuropathy, cardiac fitness, VO2 max and energy enhancement and alleviating idiopathic muscle cramps.
