Veramaris wins inaugural NASF Sustainability Award 2026 for algae-based Omega-3 innovation

Bergen, Norway
Veramaris has been named the winner of the inaugural NASF Sustainability Award 2026 at the North Atlantic Seafood Forum (NASF) in Bergen. The award was presented during the NASF Sustainability Summit, recognising exceptional leadership and innovation in seafood sustainability.

The NASF Sustainability Award was established to highlight organisations embedding sustainable practices into core operations while delivering measurable environmental and social impact across the seafood value chain. Veramaris emerged as the winner from a shortlist of three finalists, selected from seven nominees across the industry.

Other finalists included the Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling Tool (SCEPT), focused on climate accountability in seafood supply chains, and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), known for setting global standards for sustainable wild fisheries.

According to the jury, Veramaris has contributed significantly to easing pressure on marine ecosystems by producing EPA and DHA Omega-3 oils through large-scale fermentation of marine microalgae, offering a fish-free alternative to traditional fish oil used in aquaculture feed. Since its commercial launch, the company has added nearly 5 per cent to global Omega-3 supply.

Veramaris is also the first microalgae oil producer certified under the joint ASC–MSC Seaweed (Algae) Standard, reinforcing its sustainability credentials.

Presenting the award, NASF Chairman Carl-Emil Johannesen said the company exemplifies how science-based, scalable solutions can strengthen feed security while reducing reliance on finite marine resources.

The award artwork, crafted from reclaimed wood by Bergen-based artist Anette Bergo, symbolises the sustainability ethos underpinning the recognition. The NASF Sustainability Award will now be presented annually to honour impactful and responsible seafood value-chain leadership.
