The Union Health Ministry has said that no colour/additive is permitted to be used in prepared foods being sold by vendors such as vegetable, chicken and fish kebabs.
"Use of any non-permitted colour is a violation of the FSS Regulations," reads a statement submitted to Parliament by the Ministry.
The Health Ministry added that by virtue of Section 29 of the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006, the State Authority may take action to protect public health as per the principle and objectives enshrined under the FSS Act.
The matter related to food colour came to light in recent days after J&K food authority issued a public notice banning use of synthetic colour in food products.
The statement added that FSSAI through states and its regional offices conducts surveillance, monitoring, inspection and random sampling of food products to check compliance of the standards and in case where the food samples are found to be non-conforming, penal actions are initiated against the defaulting Food Business Operators.
