Singling out India, the US has issued notice for secondary tariffs of 25% on Indian exports. The US Government has officially issued a public notice imposing an additional 25% tariff on imports from India making a total of 50% tariff on Indian goods.
The tariff shall come into force with immediate effect starting from August 27 wherein the executive order for the same was signed by Donald Trump, President USA on August 06.
Earlier, the USA announced a 25% tariff on Indian exports and in August additional 25% tariff was added.
The Department of the Homeland Security USA in the notice stated, “Addressing threats to the United States by the Government of the Russian Federation, which imposed a specified rate of duty on imports of articles that are products of India, the Secretary of Homeland Security has determined that appropriate action is needed to modify the Harmonised Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS).”
The notice added that the duties set are effective with respect to products of India that are entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time on August 27, 2025.
The notice however, did not mention China, which imports more Russian oil than India.
Meanwhile, the Indian authorities called the secondary sanctions as unfair, unjustified and unreasonable and said that India will do whatever it can to safeguard its national interests and strategic autonomy.
