US FDA recalls multiple cheese brands over Listeria & Salmonella concern
Saturday, 20 September, 2025, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Maryland, USA
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a large-scale recall of several cheese brands after tests revealed possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella. The move has triggered concerns across the American food industry as the affected products were distributed in multiple states through different retail channels.

Among those impacted, Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op in Ohio has recalled cheeses produced between May 30 and August 13, 2025. The products, including organic gouda, mozzarella, provolone, yellow cheddar, Swiss, pepper jack, and Monterey jack in both shredded and loaf forms, were sold in Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Texas. Consumers can contact the company for refunds and further details.

Wegmans Food Markets has also withdrawn a range of soft and ripened cheeses sold between July 1 and August 12, 2025. The recall covers products like camembert, assorted cheese flights, grilling camembert with tapenade, and caramel apple pecan topped brie. These were distributed across several East Coast states, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Virginia, as well as Washington, D.C.

Fromi USA has voluntarily recalled its Brie Royal Faucon (Lot 615), which was sold through its Park Slope and Carroll Gardens stores in Brooklyn between July 24 and August 13. In addition, New Hampshire-based Quesito El Establo has pulled back nearly 800 pounds of its Quesito Colombiano Spanish cheese due to Salmonella contamination. The product, sold in one-pound plastic-wrapped blocks, was distributed mainly through Hispanic and Latino retail outlets in Massachusetts with expiry dates up to August 22, 2025.

Health experts have warned that both Listeria and Salmonella infections pose serious risks. Listeria can lead to fever, headaches, nausea, and muscle aches and is especially dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Salmonella typically causes fever, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, and in severe cases, can lead to hospitalisation.

The FDA has urged consumers to avoid consuming the recalled products, discard them, or return them to the place of purchase. Food businesses and retailers have been asked to check their inventories, remove affected products immediately, and alert staff to prevent further sales.

Industry observers point out that the incident underscores the importance of strict hygiene measures, environmental monitoring, and effective traceability in cheese production, especially for soft and ripened varieties that are more prone to bacterial contamination. Regulators say the recall demonstrates the continuing need for vigilant oversight to protect consumers and maintain confidence in dairy products.
