The Trump Administration has decided to ease tariffs on agri products, amid US citizens expressing dissatisfaction over the rising prices of food, which resulted in a political jolt to the ruling Republican Party in the recently held local body elections.
As per experts, the decision would benefit Indian exporters as well, particularly tea and spices' exporters expecting to get a major share of export to the US, as Donald Trump moves to ease tariffs on over 200 agri commodities.
The US administration has put several commodities on a revised tariff list including black pepper, cloves, cumin, cardamom, turmeric, ginger, tea, mango derivatives, fresh fruits and nuts.
India exported over US$500million worth of spices to the US in 2024. Similarly, tea and coffee exports to the US stood around US$83 million.
Meanwhile, big ticket items like Basmati rice and seafood including shrimps remained excluded from the list of lowered tariff items, which is under the 50% tariff bracket.
As per Indian Government estimates, several processed food categories with export value of around US$490 million, including coffee, tea extract, cocoa based items, fruit juices, fruit pulp products, spices and fresh fruit and vegetables like coconuts, guavas, cashew nuts and bananas are expected to get benefit.
And, the decision of the US administration would help Indian exporters achieve their targets, which otherwise were impacted due to higher tariffs.
