The Restaurant Group (TRG) has announced a multi-million-pound joint venture with Charcoal Concepts, the multi-brand restaurant platform owned by K Hospitality Corp, to accelerate the expansion of Asian dining brand Wagamama across India.

The announcement coincides with the opening of Wagamama's fourth restaurant in India, located in Mumbai. Under the partnership, the two companies plan to open at least 100 Wagamama restaurants across the country over the next decade, strengthening the brand's presence in one of its key international growth markets.

Andy Hornby, CEO of The Restaurant Group, said the joint venture marks a significant step in the company's international expansion strategy. He noted that India represents an important growth market, offering an opportunity to introduce more consumers to Wagamama's Asian-inspired cuisine and casual dining experience.

Francisco Neves, Senior Vice President – Franchise & Partnerships at Wagamama, said the partnership with Charcoal Concepts has already delivered encouraging results, with the brand's initial outlets exceeding performance expectations. He added that the company is looking forward to expanding its footprint across the country.

The joint venture follows the successful launch of Wagamama's first Indian restaurant in Churchgate, Mumbai, a year ago, which the company said outperformed its pre-opening projections.

Karan Kapur, Executive Director of K Hospitality Corp, said the strong consumer response since Wagamama's India debut reflects the growing demand for global restaurant concepts that offer local relevance. He added that the partnership with TRG aims to establish Wagamama as a leading player in India's Asian casual dining segment.

Rohan Sable, CEO of Charcoal Concepts, said the collaboration represents the beginning of a long-term growth journey for the brand in India. He noted that the combination of Wagamama's globally recognised brand proposition and Charcoal Concepts' expertise in scaling restaurant businesses and understanding Indian consumers would help create one of the country's most admired casual dining brands.

The Restaurant Group operates several restaurant brands in the United Kingdom, including Wagamama, Barburrito, and Brunning & Price. Charcoal Concepts, a subsidiary of K Hospitality Corp, manages a portfolio of Indian and international restaurant brands, including Copper Chimney, Bombay Brasserie, and Wagamama. K Hospitality Corp operates more than 700 locations across eight countries through its portfolio spanning restaurants, cafés, quick service restaurants, travel food services, airport lounges, catering, and institutional food services.

The companies said Wagamama outlets at Indian airports will continue to operate separately under an existing franchise agreement with Travel Food Services (TFS), the travel QSR and airport lounges business of K Hospitality Corp.
