Tetra Pak unveils world’s first paper-based barrier juice carton

Tetra Pak has taken a major step in sustainable packaging by launching the first aseptic juice carton with a paper-based barrier, developed in partnership with Spanish beverage producer García Carrión. This new Tetra Brik Aseptic 200 ml Slim Leaf carton has begun hitting shelves in Spain under the Don Simón brand and represents a significant shift away from traditional aluminium-foil barrier packaging toward more renewable materials.
The innovative carton is made with up to 80 % paper, and when combined with plant-based polymers in the coatings, achieves 92 % renewable content. Independent verification by the Carbon Trust reveals that this material dramatically reduces the carbon footprint by around 43 % compared with a conventional aseptic carton that uses aluminium foil and fossil-based polymers.
A key benefit of the paper-based barrier is that it protects contents against oxygen, light, moisture, and bacteria, ensuring food safety and shelf life comparable to foil-based cartons. At the same time, the design promotes better recycling outcomes: cartons using the new barrier can be collected, sorted, and recycled at scale where appropriate infrastructure exists, and the improved material composition is expected to increase the efficiency of fibre recovery during recycling processes.
Executives from both companies highlighted the environmental and strategic impact of this launch. Don José García Carrión, president of García Carrión, noted that the move aligns with the company’s long-standing commitment to responsible innovation and environmental stewardship, while Tatiana Liceti, executive vice president for packaging solutions at Tetra Pak, described the rollout as “a significant step in our journey towards fully renewable and recyclable packaging.”
This innovation follows earlier successes of Tetra Pak’s paper-based barriers in dairy packaging and shows how sustainable alternatives can scale across product categories without compromising performance.
