The Telangana Food Safety Department has significantly ramped up its enforcement efforts this March, launching a series of high-profile raids and a statewide special drive to curb the sale of unsafe and adulterated food items.
On March 28, the department's 'Flying Squad' conducted a surprise inspection at a cashew repacking agency in Mallapur, Hyderabad.
The raid uncovered serious hygiene violations, including 36 kg of cashews that were found to be infested with insects and were immediately discarded on-site.
Additionally, officials seized 210 kg of cashews, valued at approximately ?1.5 lakh, due to suspected quality issues, with samples sent for further laboratory analysis.
?This crackdown on dry fruits follows a massive statewide initiative targeting the confectionery industry.
Starting on March 24, the food safety officials inspected 109 manufacturing and retail establishments across Telangana.
The State Food Safety Commissioner's office, in a statement, stated that the drive resulted in the collection of 190 samples of candies, eclairs, chocolates, and imitation sweets for lab testing.
During the operation, authorities seized a significant quantity of suspected unsafe confectionery and discarded 35 kg of expired products across various districts while several businesses were issued improvement and show-cause notices for failing to meet safety standards.
