Syngenta partners with Heritable Agriculture to unleash AI for global vegetable seeds selection
Thursday, 23 October, 2025, 14 : 00 PM [IST]
BASEL, Switzerland
Syngenta Vegetable Seeds announced a strategic collaboration with Heritable Agriculture, a spinoff from Google parent Alphabet's innovation lab, to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) in optimizing its commercial crop portfolios. The partnership is set to revolutionize how Syngenta identifies and places the best vegetable varieties for growers worldwide.

Vegetable seed companies routinely face the complex challenge of determining which varieties—from hundreds available will perform optimally in diverse markets with unique climates and growing conditions. Traditionally, this process involves extensive data analysis and countless hours of trialing.

By integrating Heritable's expertise in AI and decision science, Syngenta will leverage historical data on geographical conditions and crop trials against its global product portfolio. The goal is to better predict the performance of commercial varieties, ensuring growers receive the best possible product offering tailored to their specific region, potentially down to a 10-meter resolution.

Matthew Johnston, global head of vegetable seeds and flowers at Syngenta, highlighted the crucial nature of the endeavor, stating, "Planting the right seed is critical to a grower's success. New technologies such as AI can help us bring the best innovation to the field or greenhouse."

Heritable's team will focus on dissecting the complex interaction between a seed's genetics and environmental factors, including weather conditions and soil variables. This initiative represents another step in Syngenta’s broader adoption of AI across its business, reinforcing its commitment to supporting food security and ensuring a reliable, affordable supply of produce amidst the challenges of climate change.
