Swiss Wine, the official body representing and promoting the reputation of Swiss wines worldwide, has become a Supporter of the Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW).

Jane Masters, chairman, IMW, said, “I am delighted that Swiss Wine has joined our global family of Supporters.”
“We have more students than ever before in the MW Study Programme – from 40 countries around the world and from all aspects of the wine trade – so as the institute continues to grow, it is exciting to welcome a Supporter from a new geography,” she added.

Switzerland has a proud heritage of viticulture and wine making. The first grapes were grown during the Roman Empire, and the country is now home to nearly 240 grape varieties.
Indigenous grape varieties that enrich and contribute to the identity of the Swiss vineyards represent one-third of the crop. Those include the Chasselas and other interesting alpine varieties such as Arvine, Amigne, Cornalin and Humagne.

Gilles Besse, president, Swiss Wine, said: “The world of wine and education is constantly evolving and we are excited about supporting the activities of the Institute of Masters of Wine.”

At the IMW annual awards ceremony and reception, the institute welcomed two new Swiss Masters of Wine to the membership, Ivan Barbic and Jan Schwarzenbach (they join Robin Kick, Paul Liversedge and Philipp Schwander).

To celebrate this, Swiss Wine has selected three wines from indigenous Swiss grapes - Chasselas Chemin de Fer by Luc Massy from Lavaux, Petite Arvine Maître de Chais Réserve by Provins and Cornalin by Jean-René Germanier, both from Valais.

New MWs
The Institute of Masters of Wine welcomed 18 new Masters of Wine (MWs) to its membership at the institute’s annual awards ceremony in London.

The ceremony celebrated the induction of the new MWs to the institute and recognised individual excellence in all aspects of the masters of wine examination.

The new MWs come from all corners of the world, and include the institute’s first MWs from mainland China, Croatia, Czech Republic, India, Israel, Malaysia, Romania, Taiwan and Wales. There are now 354 MWs based in 28 different countries.

Masters said, “Many congratulations to each of the 18 new MWs. It is a tremendous personal achievement. The diversity of geographies and range of their professional wine experience reflects the international membership of the IMW.”

“Their future contribution individually and collectively as professional, knowledgeable, critical independent thinkers represents a bright future for the global wine trade,” she added.

Individual awards were given during the ceremony to the MWs who performed exceptionally in a particular area of the MW examination.

The Villa Maria Award was presented to Ireland’s Mick O’Connell for his outstanding knowledge and understanding of viticulture in the MW examinations.

The Errázuriz Award was presented to China’s Fongyee Walker for her performance in the business of wine examination.

New Zealand’s Stephen Wong was presented both the Taransaud Tonnellerie Award for his excellence in the production and handling of wine paper and the Robert Mondavi Winery Award for his outstanding performance across all of the theory papers.

The Noval Award, sponsored by Quinta do Noval (a part of AXA Millésimes) is awarded to the best research paper by a new MW.

Matthew Forster of the United Kingdom won the award for his research paper, The Colheita and Frasqueira Classifications: A Study of the Legal Framework and Key Themes in the Production of Vintage Madeira.

Mary Margaret McCamic of the United States was awarded The Bollinger Medal for her outstanding tasting ability and she also received the IMW Outstanding Achievement Award, sponsored by the Austrian Wine Marketing Board.

The 18 new MWs, who passed the MW Examinations in February and September 2016, were Richard Ballantyne (Wales), Ivan Barbic (Switzerland), Bree Boskov (Australia), Barbara Boyle (Ireland), Matthew Deller (USA), Forster, Sonal Holland (India), Jeremy Lithgow (UK), McCamic, Iain Munson (France), O’Connell, Eran Pick (Israel), Mark Pygott (Taiwan), Ana-Emilia Sapungiu (UK), Jan Schwarzenbach (Switzerland), Lenka Sedlackova (UK), Walker and Wong.
