Swinton House has opened its first outlet in Kolkata on Park Street, introducing an immersive hospitality concept that combines modern European café cuisine, cocktails, eclectic interiors and nightlife. The new property builds on the concept’s Jaipur origins while drawing inspiration from Kolkata’s heritage architecture, culinary traditions and vibrant social culture.
The concept was first introduced at a 150-year-old heritage property in Jaipur, imagined as the home of a fictional character, Mr. Swinton. In Kolkata, the narrative moves into his apartment, creating a more intimate setting that reflects the city’s distinct character and cultural influences.
The interiors feature spaces inspired by different aspects of Mr Swinton’s life, including his bedroom, office and library, alongside a luxurious washroom equipped with a jacuzzi. Rich textures, statement lighting, patterned surfaces and vintage-inspired elements create a layered, eclectic environment designed to encourage exploration and discovery.
Kolkata’s British-era architecture, heritage buildings and established food and nightlife culture made Park Street a natural setting for the brand’s expansion. Rather than replicating the Jaipur experience, the Kolkata property has been designed to establish its own identity, incorporating the city’s history, flavours and contemporary dining preferences.
Food is central to this approach. Curated by Chef Prince Beniwal, the Kolkata-exclusive menu, themed Kolkata, Reimagined, combines modern European café cuisine with Bengali flavours, street-food favourites and traditional home-style cooking. The menu reinterprets familiar local dishes through contemporary techniques and formats while retaining their distinctive flavours.
Highlights include a modern European-style Bhetki fish croquette served with creamy Kasundi mashed potato and a Mishti Doi cheesecake inspired by the caramelised sweetness of the traditional Bengali dessert. Other offerings include Jhalmuri, Phuchka, Beetroot Chops and Kosha Mangsho.
Mustard, kasundi, mustard oil, Bengali spices, fish, mutton and seasonal vegetables form the foundation of the menu, bringing regional ingredients and culinary nostalgia into a contemporary dining setting.
The cocktail programme, led by Head Mixologist Ankur, follows an ingredient-driven approach, exploring flavour profiles ranging from nuts and coffee to floral notes, spices and sweetness. The drinks combine creative infusions, foam accents and contemporary techniques with classic bartending methods, locally sourced ingredients and globally inspired spirits.
Drawing on his Himachali roots, Ankur incorporates ingredients and flavour references from the hills into the cocktail selection. The programme also creates a flavour narrative connecting Jaipur, known as the Pink City, with Kolkata, the City of Joy.
The property’s atmosphere evolves throughout the day to accommodate different dining and social occasions. Weekdays and daytime hours focus on premium dining and cocktails, catering to intimate lunches, business conversations, date nights and dinners. As evening progresses, music, cocktails and celebrations take centre stage, with weekends and late nights bringing a stronger emphasis on the bar and nightlife experience.
Through its combination of immersive interiors, regionally inspired cuisine and a contemporary cocktail programme, Swinton House aims to establish a distinctive presence in Kolkata’s evolving hospitality landscape while adapting its original concept to the city’s culinary and cultural identity.
