The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution observed Swachhata Pakhwada recently with a series of cleanliness and awareness initiatives aimed at promoting hygiene, sustainability, and environmental responsibility. The campaign reaffirmed the department’s commitment to strengthening the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The year 2026 marks the 11th consecutive year of Swachhata Pakhwada being implemented by the department. To ensure effective participation, the DFPD circulated a detailed calendar of activities and guidelines to all its attached and subordinate offices and organizations.

The campaign began on February 16 with an inaugural ceremony where officers and staff members took the Swachhata Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining cleanliness in workplaces and daily life. The pledge was administered under the leadership of the Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser (AS&FA) of the department.

During the fortnight-long campaign, several activities were conducted to spread awareness about cleanliness and environmental protection. These included discouraging the use of single-use plastics, promoting proper waste management practices, and organizing plantation drives. Awareness banners and posters highlighting the importance of hygiene and sanitation were also displayed prominently in departmental offices.

Employees and officials actively participated in daily cleanliness drives that included removing unnecessary clutter, dusting and sanitizing office premises, segregating waste, and cleaning common areas such as corridors and washrooms. These efforts aimed to create a healthier and more organized workplace environment.

As part of the initiative, the department also organized a felicitation programme for Safai Mitras, recognizing their vital contribution in maintaining cleanliness across office premises. Sanitation workers were honoured with gift hampers as a token of appreciation for their dedicated service.

The Department of Food and Public Distribution reiterated its commitment to sustaining the spirit of cleanliness through continuous awareness and collective action, contributing to the broader vision of building a cleaner and healthier India.
