The FSSAI has directed the State Food Safety Commissioners to take action against food businesses using industrial dye auramine in food products. Auramine is an industrial dye not permitted under the FSS Food Products and Food Additives Regulations, 2011.
In an order, the national food regulator has stated that it was in receipt of complaints that auramine, an industrial dye used for textiles and leather, is being added to roasted chana and other similar food items to enhance colour.
And, the States have been asked to conduct a targeted enforcement drive to eliminate the possibility of any presence of such unwarranted adulterants in food items.
"Accordingly, the Commissioners of Food Safety of all States and Central licensing authorities shall initiate appropriate action against defaulting food business operators under their jurisdiction," reads the order.
Dr. Satyen Kumar Panda, Executive Director, Compliance Strategies, FSSAI, has added that its presence in any food renders the product unsafe under Section 3(1)(zz)(v) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
"Conduct targeted enforcement actions including inspections, sampling, testing and subsequent actions of roasted chana, and other similar food products, which are vulnerable to such adulteration, in organised, unorganised sectors and e-commerce platforms who are involved in manufacturing, processing, storage, distribution, transportation and sale of such food articles," the order added.
The FSSAI has also listed four labs for the purpose of auramine testing, which include Shiva Analyticals (India) Private Limited, Bengaluru, Karnataka; National Commodities Management Services Limited, Gurugram, Haryana; Vimta Labs Limited, Hyderabad, Telangana; and Eureka Analytical Services Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore, Karnataka (for processed foods).
