Spice exporters to meet in Kochi amid tariff uncertainty, stricter residue norms

Leading spice exporters from across the country are set to convene in Kochi this week against the backdrop of rising tariff uncertainty in key global markets and increasingly stringent maximum residue limits (MRLs) imposed by importing nations. The high-level meeting is expected to deliberate on strategies to safeguard India’s spice trade, which has been navigating regulatory pressures and volatile trade policies.

Exporters are particularly concerned about evolving tariff structures in major destinations such as the US and the European Union, where policy shifts and protectionist measures have added layers of unpredictability to shipments. At the same time, tighter residue norms for pesticides and contaminants have compelled Indian players to strengthen farm-level traceability, testing infrastructure, and quality control systems.

Industry stakeholders are likely to seek greater coordination with the Spices Board of India to address compliance challenges and ensure seamless market access. Discussions are expected to focus on capacity building for farmers, adoption of good agricultural practices (GAP), and enhancing laboratory testing capabilities to meet international benchmarks.

India, one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of spices, has been witnessing steady demand for products such as chilli, cumin, turmeric, and pepper. However, sporadic rejections due to residue violations have underscored the need for stricter monitoring and better supply chain integration.

The Kochi meeting is also anticipated to examine diversification into emerging markets, reducing overdependence on traditional buyers, and exploring value-added spice products. With global buyers becoming increasingly quality-conscious, exporters are expected to emphasize transparency, certification, and digital traceability systems.

The outcome of the deliberations could play a crucial role in shaping India’s spice export roadmap amid tightening global trade norms and fluctuating tariff regimes.
