fiogf49gjkf0d Following a news report about the withdrawal by Shri Shiva Foods Inc of MTR sambar powder because it was contaminated with Salmonella, the Bengaluru-based food processing major categorically stated that the former, which is based in Long Island City, New York, was not an authorised importer or distributor of its products.
It stated, “Shri Shiva Foods Inc is recalling MTR sambar powder because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. The company sold the packaged sambar powder from January to October through two wholesalers, one in New York and the other in Ohio. Distribution beyond the wholesale level is not included in the recall.”
MTR Foods’ spokesperson said, “It seems that this is a case is a result of parallel exports or unauthorised exports wherein products that are meant for domestic consumption are exported without our knowledge and consent.”
“From the lot number and the picture shown in Shri Shiva Foods Inc’s statement (Lot # 15J27C, manufactured on October 27, 2015), it is clear that the product is only meant for consumption in India,” he added.
“Moreover, MTR Sambar Masala has a shelf life of 12 months in India. This product passed its Indian expiry date in October 2016,” the spokesperson stated.
“At MTR Foods we adhere to strict national as well as international standards across all operations: from sourcing the finest quality, safe ingredients to processing and packaging using cutting-edge technology,” stated a company official.
“All MTR products are manufactured in a state-of-the-art, ISO 22000-certified factory under a completely closed environment. The company has also met the stringent requirements for the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification as developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, a global food safety standard,” he added.
MTR Foods has been a key exporter of Indian packaged foods to the United States for over 20 years now. Its plants and processes are US Food and Drug Administration- (USFDA) approved and its packaging is USFDA-compliant. In the last three years, none of the MTR authorised consignments has been rejected by USFDA.
“We have reached out to Shri Shiva Foods Inc to find out the reasons why they are recalling an already expired product by indicating that the products may have salmonella. We are yet to hear from them on this issue,” said the company official.
