Spray Engineering Devices Limited (SED) has secured a turnkey contract to develop what is being described as the world’s first boilerless greenfield standalone sugar refinery at Kandla, Gujarat. The 1,000–1,500 tonnes per day (TPD) facility is slated for completion by March 31, 2027.

Strategically located near key export corridors, the refinery will be powered entirely by renewable energy, including solar and wind, and is designed to operate with zero water consumption and zero carbon emissions. The project also includes a long-term Operations and Maintenance (O&M) agreement, ensuring sustained efficiency after commissioning.

According to the company, the plant will feature closed-loop moisture recovery systems to achieve zero water usage and integrated lime recalcination technology to internally recover and reuse lime, significantly reducing solid waste. The facility is expected to achieve 99% sugar recovery and produce export-grade refined sugar below 15 ICUMSA, while processing high-colour raw sugar up to 1200 ICUMSA.

Vivek Verma, managing director of SED, said the project demonstrates that industrial growth can be decoupled from environmental depletion. He added that the refinery’s circular engineering model sets a new sustainability benchmark for the global sugar industry.

The project is being developed in collaboration with Fullon Sugar Private Limited. Pravin Kumar Shishodiya, managing director of Fullon Sugar, said the partnership aims to establish a global standard for sustainable sugar refining while reinforcing India’s position in green manufacturing.

The plant’s energy consumption is projected at approximately 70 kWh per tonne of sugar, with lime usage limited to about 1 kg per tonne through recalcination. Positioned to cater to both domestic and export markets, the refinery aligns with India’s broader 2070 Net Zero goals and reflects growing momentum toward sustainable industrial infrastructure.
