Jain Irrigation Systems Limited (JISL) has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth $18.27 million (approximately Rs 127 crore) by Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), Kigali, Rwanda, for irrigation and watershed development (1,220/1,752 hectare) in the Mahama sector under export targeted modern irrigated agriculture projects in the African nation. The project will be executed near Rusumo on the Rwanda-Tanzania border.
The project is financed by EXIM Bank of India under the Government of India’s Line of Credit (LOC) programme. Rwanda, as a country, is investing in modern agriculture project, and is at the forefront of using latest technology to improve productivity. They have taken impressive strides in value-added agriculture.
JISL has full responsibility of development infrastructure for various irrigation systems viz sprinkler irrigation, centre pivot and pipe hydrant system. It is important to note here that all irrigation systems will work under gravity, and as EPC contractor, JISL has the ability to design the same. The total area under irrigation is 1,220 hectare. Also, there is the component of watershed development and capacity building for over 1,752 hectare. This project is another milestone in JISL’s strategy of participating in a meaningful way in the irrigation/water/agriculture sector growth across the large continent of Africa. JISL intends to complete the project in the next 18 months. This will help JISL to grow its exports substantially.
