Physicians from the Medical Toxicologists and Emergency Department are on high alert after reports of tampering in soft drinks emerged in the Mexican city of Mexicali recently.
These reports indicated that 7UP bottles consumed in the city were contaminated with methamphetamine. An investigation is underway to determine how the drinks were contaminated.
Experts reminded people to be vigilant when travelling. “It is important to check that the seal for any food and drink consumed is still intact and show no signs of tampering,” said Daniel Brooks, medical director, Banner Poison and Drug Information Centre.
“If you notice any difference in the colour, taste or smell, throw it out,” he added.
Side effects from this soft drink contamination can present suddenly, and may result in life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms may include:
- Irritation of, or abnormal taste in, the mouth or throat
- Burning in the esophagus or abdomen
- Nausea or vomiting
- Difficulty breathing
- Fast or irregular heartbeat
People who consume drinks or food suspected to have been contaminated in any manner should immediately contact the Poison Control Centre.
The poison centres’ nurses and pharmacists are available 24X7 for any concerning ingestion or exposure, including unexpected dietary effects.
If significant symptoms develop, one should contact Emergency Medical Services immediately.
