Ramaiah varsity to focus on health through nutra at meet from January 22

Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences is gearing up for a three-day national conference on Health and Wellness through Nutraceuticals 2020. The event will be held between January 22 and 24, 2020, within the campus of Ramaiah University at its Medical College Auditorium.

The coordinated programme has Ramaiah Indic Speciality Ayurveda, Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India) (AFST[I]), Networking of Professionals of Food and Nutrition (NetProFan) and International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) supporting the university in its quest to promote health and wellness through safe food practices.

“The objective is to augment the focus of integrating food-based scientific practices with traditional and modern medicine. Our plan is to propagate the benefits of plant-based extracts and innovations in food science and technology for a healthy lifestyle,” said Priya Arjun, organising secretary and head, food and beverage service department, and head, nutrition and nutraceutical research centre, Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences.

The conference theme is ‘Innovation though science and engineering for safe and healthy food. Hence conference session tracks will revolve around seven sub themes: Challenges in food chain from farm to folk; Novel and functional foods in health; Enrichment of foods through nutrients; Nutrition security, nutraceuticals and nutri-genomics in disease management; Health and wellness; The Ayurveda way; Bioactive molecules and nutrients for healthcare; and Marketing safe and healthy food the ethical way.

The event, which kicks off from January 22, will provide an overview of the workshop by Dr V Prakash, former distinguished scientist and director, CFTRI, Mysuru. The workshop is on ‘Lifestyle Ayurveda and the Power of Traditional Foods. Here Sathyanarayana Bhat, Retd Principal, Ayurveda College, Mysuru, will address on the topic Food is your best medicine: An Ayurveda perspective. This will be followed by T K Girija Kumari, deputy director, Ramaiah Indic Speciality Ayurveda, speaking on ‘Food turns into medicine when consumed right: The power of Ayurvedic cooking.

The Indian Federation of Culinary Associations (IFCA), NetProFan will have the second workshop session on Eat Right for Healthy Life. The third workshop is on green solutions for clean and hygienic kitchen by Bhavanishankar T Narasimhabhatta, director, Schevaran Innovation Centre, Mysuru.

The formal inauguration of the event is on January 22 where Dr Prakash will address on Food Tradition, Nutrition and Health. There will be a roundtable discussion on Way forward from farm to folk for a healthy society. Nidhi Sharma, head, research and advocacy, Akshaya Patra Foundation, Bengaluru, will speak on Reaching out healthy food to the public.

There are also a slew of scientific sessions where topics like Organic farming food option, Importance of smart food, Hygiene and sanitation, and Facts influencing food journey from farm to folk will be tackled.
