Rajkot Municipal Court found the owner of a gruh udhyog (home-based business) guilty of selling adulterated goods and sentenced him to one month imprisonment for not possessing proper licence required to own and run a food business.
The authorities, under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, also fined three other food business operators for selling food items that were unsafe for consumption.
In this regard, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation released a statement informing that the Health department had collected coconut laddu samples from the gruh udhyog in 2015. The food analysts found that the laddus contained more than permissible amount of tartrazine, which gives a yellow hue to food products, making them unsafe for consumption.
The Municipal Court, earlier in June, fined and sentenced other food business operators for selling food products unsafe for consumption as well as not possessing proper licence required to own a food business.
In another case, food testing labs found more than permissible amount of Iodine in samples of Iodised salt, for which the food business operator was fined and sentenced to imprisonment.
