As of 21 November 2025, total sowing of rabi crops in India has surpassed 306.31 lakh hectares, official data released by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare shows — a notable rise compared with the same period last year.
Among key segments, oilseeds have crossed 76.64 lakh hectares, while pulses have recorded sowing on 73.36 lakh hectares, up from 68.15 lakh hectares in the corresponding period of 2024–25.
In the primary cereal category, wheat accounts for a substantial area — 128.37 lakh ha, up sharply from 107.09 lakh ha last year. Rice sowing stands at 8.26 lakh ha, marginally higher than last season’s 7.59 lakh ha.
The sowing data also includes coverage under “Shri Anna & Coarse Cereals” at 19.69 lakh ha, compared to 17.26 lakh ha during the same period last year.
Within oilseeds, rapeseed and mustard show strong traction, with 73.80 lakh ha sown in 2025–26, up from 69.58 lakh ha last season — indicating favourable farmer preference in these segments.
The improved acreage across diverse rabi crops comes amid efforts to ensure crop diversification and enhanced food security. Experts suggest that the rise in pulses and oilseeds sowing reflects farmer optimism, possibly driven by stable input costs and stronger demand outlook.
The department’s periodic sowing report further highlights a healthy uptick in overall rabi sowing area compared with the previous year, signalling a promising start to the season. Farmers, policymakers and agribusiness stakeholders will be closely watching yield outcomes in the coming months.
