Purabi Dairy has formally entered the Barak Valley region of Assam with the inauguration of a renovated milk processing plant at Gungoor in Silchar, marking a significant step in strengthening organised dairy infrastructure in southern Assam.

The facility, with an initial processing capacity of about 20,000 litres of milk per day, has been upgraded with modern processing machinery and quality control systems to ensure hygienically processed and standardised dairy products for consumers in the region.

The plant was inaugurated by Krishnendu Paul, Minister of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Government of Assam, in the presence of Kaushik Rai, Minister for Barak Valley Development, and S Regupathi, Executive Director of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), along with other dignitaries and industry representatives.

The plant was earlier operated by the Assam Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department but remained non-functional for several years. Under the Assam Dairy Development Plan, it was handed over to North East Dairy and Foods Limited, a joint venture between the Government of Assam and NDDB, for renovation and operationalisation.

With the commissioning of the facility, consumers in Silchar and surrounding areas will gain access to fresh pouch milk and a range of value-added dairy products under the Purabi brand. The move is also expected to improve supply chain efficiency and strengthen cold chain infrastructure in the region.

Officials said the initiative will help integrate local dairy farmers into organised milk procurement networks, ensuring better price transparency and reliable market access for producers. By linking farmers with cooperative institutions and modern processing infrastructure, the project aims to enhance rural incomes and promote sustainable dairy development in Assam.

Industry experts note that the entry of Purabi Dairy into Barak Valley will play a key role in expanding the organised dairy sector in the region while improving the availability of safe and quality milk for consumers.
