The union government’s PM formalisation of micro food processing enterprises (PMFME) Scheme is continuing to deliver substantial support to micro-level food processors across the country, aiding financial inclusion and business growth in the sector. The progress was shared in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha by the Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, Ravneet Singh.
Implemented by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) through State and Union Territory governments, the PMFME Scheme provides financial, technical and business support to entrepreneurs setting up new micro food processing units or upgrading existing ones. Under the scheme, loans for credit-linked subsidies are sanctioned by banks after project appraisal, helping reduce barriers to entry and expansion for small processors.
Against the target of extending credit-linked subsidy support to 200,000 micro food processing enterprises, 162,744 enterprises have already received sanctioned loans under the scheme. This reflects a significant reach of the programme and demonstrates its role in strengthening grassroots food processing capabilities.
To enhance outreach, the Ministry regularly engages with lending banks and state authorities. Issues faced by entrepreneurs are raised at the Department of Financial Services (DFS) and State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC) levels, while workshops, seminars and awareness camps are conducted at national, state and district levels to help applicants understand benefits and streamline implementation.
While there is no specific fund earmarked for women entrepreneurs, the scheme includes seed capital support of Rs 40,000 per Self-Help Group (SHG) member to bolster participation by women engaged in food processing activities. So far, thousands of women, SC and ST entrepreneurs have benefited from credit-linked subsidies and seed capital assistance.
The PMFME scheme continues to play a key role in formalising micro food processors, boosting employment, encouraging local entrepreneurship, and enhancing value addition in India’s food ecosystem.
