PLI scheme strengthens India’s food processing capacity, boosts jobs & exports

The production linked incentive scheme for food processing industry (PLISFPI) has significantly bolstered India’s food processing sector by enhancing production capacity, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening the export potential of processed food products, according to information shared in the Rajya Sabha.
Under the scheme, 170 applications across various categories have been approved up to September 2025, marking strong industry participation and investor interest in domestic food manufacturing.
Officials highlighted that PLISFPI has contributed to an additional processing capacity of 35 lakh tonnes per annum in the country. This expanded capacity is seen as key to meeting rising domestic demand for processed food items while reducing reliance on imports.
A major impact of the scheme is its employment generation potential. So far, PLISFPI-linked investments have led to approximately 3.39 lakh jobs (direct and indirect), underlining its role in supporting livelihoods and creating opportunities in both manufacturing and ancillary sectors.
To qualify for incentives, food processors must ensure that the entire manufacturing process including primary processing takes place in India, promoting local value addition and strengthening domestic supply chains.
Exports of agricultural processed food products from units approved under the PLISFPI have also shown consistent growth. With a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.23 % for the period up to 2024-25 compared with 2019-20, the scheme is credited with enhancing India’s competitiveness in global markets.
The information was provided by Ravneet Singh, Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, in a written reply to Parliament, reflecting the government’s focus on expanding the processed food ecosystem and aligning it with broader economic and employment goals.
