The Scientific Panel on Methods of Sampling and Analysis of FSSAI has approved methods for determination of iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 in fortified rice kernels and asked the food testing laboratories to use the methods with immediate effect.
For the determination of Iron as Fe in Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK), the scientific panel has approved Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) for estimating the iron content in FRK. For determination of Folic Acid (Vitamin B9) in Fortified Rice Kernel, the method approved by the panel is only applicable for quantitative analysis of Folic acid (Vitamin B9) in fortified rice kernels using LC-MS/MS.
And, for determination of Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin) in Fortified Rice Kernel, the panel has approved method using Liquid chromatography coupled with Tandem Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS/MS).
It is learnt that the focus of the food regulator has increased over the fortification drive and as a result mechanisms are put in place for strengthening of the food safety ecosystem vis-a-vis fortificated products. As reported earlier, recently the FSSAI has asked the notified laboratories to mandatorily upload all the analysis/testing reports with the INFoLNET (Indian Food Laboratories Network) port.
