The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) announced that the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management-Kundli (NIFTEM-K) has signed a landmark five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Saskatchewan (USask) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in food science, technology and related academic research.

The MoU was formally inked by Dr Harinder Singh Oberoi, Director of NIFTEM-K, and Dr Baljit Singh, Vice President (Research) at USask, in the presence of Scott Moe, Premier of Saskatchewan, along with senior officials from MoFPI including Secretary Avinash Joshi and Joint Secretary D. Praveen. The high-level participation underlines the strategic importance of the partnership in fostering global food systems innovation.

Under the pact, both institutions will collaborate on developing online teaching and training programmes in food science, food systems economics and business development. The agreement also envisages short-term exchange programmes for faculty, researchers and students, offering exposure to global best practices in food processing and innovation ecosystems.

The MoU further outlines cooperation on joint research projects, collaborative funding proposals and the development of integrated degree programmes in food processing technology. Both partners will organise joint seminars, workshops and industry-oriented short courses to promote cross-learning and knowledge exchange.

By leveraging USask’s strong agrifood research capabilities and NIFTEM-K’s mandate as a “one-stop solution provider” for India’s food processing sector, the partnership aims to catalyse capacity building and technology-driven solutions for sustainable food systems. The collaboration is expected to contribute to strengthening food security, value chains and research-led industrial growth in both countries.

The MoU represents a significant milestone in NIFTEM-K’s efforts to expand its global footprint and reinforce India’s leadership in food technology, entrepreneurship and management through meaningful international partnerships.
