Mumbai’s jazz lovers are in for a new hospitality experience, with the launch of The Bluebop Cafe in Khar West. Open all days of the week between noon and 1am, it will offer artisan Italian American fare, cocktails and a performance space for music, with a focus on the golden era of jazz (from the 1920s to the 1960s), blues, bebop and classical.
Spearheading the culinary affair at The Bluebop Cafe is chef Saurabh Raturi, who has conceptualised the menu, inspired by the jazz cafes in New York. The cocktails have been concocted by mixologist Dinesh Mondkar and are complementary to the jazz tunes of the space. Their Italian American menu is an interesting spread and has a host of vegan and gluten-free options. The must-tries are the seafood bisque, the Instagrammable Mozzarella Balloon Salad and the Barley and Millet Salad. Appetisers like Jerk Chicken Tacos and Asparagus and Polenta with a piquant garlic flavour and the Crispy Calamari Crocanti are perfect accompaniments to the bar menu. Other dishes include freshly-baked New York-Style Pizza like Pepperoni and Cinque Formaggio. The main course comprises Mushroom Risotto, Grilled Norwegian Salmon and Lobster Thermidor. The desserts include Tiramisu, matcha mousse and profiteroles. The bar menu boasts of quirky cocktails like the Espresso Martini, Go Bananas (prepared with sous-vide whiskey and banana with a hint of caramel and banana saccharum and orange bitter), and the Hibiscus Gimlet (made with an in-house prepared hibiscus cordial and gin).
The eatery marks the inception of the joint entrepreneurship journey of the creative siblings, Eesha and Amar Sukhi, who have a robust team onboard. Their passion for food and beverage and the jazz genre prominently reflects on the characteristics of the brand. They intend to create a space where people feel comfortable with a classic vintage auro. Speaking about his love for jazz, and the need to promote it in the city, Sukhi said, “I've grown up listening to jazz from my youngest days, and as such, it is this music that I have grown to love and appreciate.”
“My sense is that we, in large part, become like the music we consume. We internalise those messages and the underlying aesthetic. Jazz and the blues are amazingly beautiful, intelligent and improvisational combining complex harmony with unforgettable melodies. We need more jazz in our lives,” he added.
Speaking about the overall experience they intend to offer, Eesha said, “In today’s time elevating customer experience is key, we want people to visit us for the food and music, stay for the warmth and return for the experience they have. We want to offer a comfortable yet fun space for our guests.”
The space doubles up as the perfect performance space with the aesthetically designed interiors by architect Bina Shah, along with the technical expertise of acoustical consultant, Kapil Thirwani from Munro Acoustics LLP who has designed the sound. He has used specific material for the ceiling, pillars and glass panels to ensure the acoustics remain uniform throughout the 65-70 seater space. Speaking on the interiors, Shah said, “The objective was to achieve a warm environment that is classy, not too casual and not intimidating at the same time. The idea was to enhance the vintage look of the place with warm tones blending in with the red colour on the walls thus making the place very vibrant and upbeat.”
