The National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) was approved by the union cabinet on November 25, 2024 with the aim of promoting natural farming practices across the country, the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare informed Parliament. The mission is backed by a total financial outlay of Rs 2,481 crore, of which the central share is Rs 1,584 crore and the states’ share is Rs 897 crore up to the 15th finance commission period ending March 2026.
Natural farming is a sustainable agriculture approach that reduces dependency on external chemical inputs. Under NMNF, the focus is on promoting nature-based systems that enhance on-farm production using bio-inputs made within farms. These practices aim to lower input costs, improve soil health and foster resilient ecosystems that are beneficial for farmers and the environment alike.
The mission also emphasises integrated agriculture–animal husbandry models, especially with local cattle breeds, to create synergistic farming systems. Strengthening on-farm agroecological research and extension services through institutions like ICAR, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and agricultural universities is another core objective. This will support knowledge dissemination and farmer education across regions.
NMNF seeks to leverage the rich experience of existing natural farming practitioners and scientific expertise to develop location-specific practices that can expand the reach of natural farming. Standardising certification procedures for naturally grown, chemical-free produce and promoting a single national brand for such products are key steps aimed at creating market identity and value for farmers practising natural farming.
The mission’s holistic strategy is expected to contribute significantly to more sustainable, cost-effective agricultural practices in India. By encouraging farmers to adopt ecologically sound and resource-efficient techniques, NMNF aims to deliver not just environmental benefits but also improved farmer incomes and long-term agricultural resilience.
This information was provided by Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ramnath Thakur, in response to a question in the Lok Sabha.
