Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister for Food Processing Industries, has said that MoFPI is working with the Commerce Ministry on branding of Indian food products. He informed that the Commerce Ministry has shortlisted many ready-to-eat food products along with fruits and vegetables for export markets.

“Government is moving towards branding of food products and creation of a Market Development Board,” he said, while adding that food processing is one of the largest industrial sectors with its contribution of 32% in the total food market.

Tomar made these observations while addressing the 14th edition of the seminar Agro and Food Tech hosted by the industry body CII, virtually.

The minister added that India’s agriculture and rural economy is very robust. He said that significant steps have been taken by the government for proper marketing and technological intervention that includes the three farm Bills passed by the government recently.

On the initiatives of MoFPI, he shared that under Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, MoFPI has started PMFME (PM Formalisation of Micro food Enterprises) scheme with an outlay of Rs 20,000 crore.

“MFP scheme is an important element of PMKSY whose objective is to link agricultural production to the market by bringing together the farmers, processors and retailers. As of now, 37 MFPs have been approved out of which 20 have begun operations,” he said.

While addressing the summit, Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister, Uttar Pradesh, has invited the industries to invest in the food processing sector in the state. He said that Uttar Pradesh was one of the major producers of horticultural crops and food grains in India, which served as a strong base for the food processing industry.

He added that Government of Uttar Pradesh has initiated a number of policy initiatives to promote investments in the agri and food processing sector and the state is setting new benchmarks and standards in creating a mark in the food processing sector.
