In a major step towards addressing malnutrition and anaemia, Millers for Nutrition, powered by TechnoServe, convened millers, government officials, nutrition experts, and industry leaders at a special event titled “Unlocking Market Potential: Advancing Fortified Rice in Punjab” held at Hotel Park Plaza, Ludhiana. The initiative aims to make fortified rice a key part of India’s fight against hidden hunger.
The event also marked the launch of ‘The Rice Pot’, a new fortified rice brand from Jai Maa Chhinmastika Rice Mills, enriched with essential nutrients including Iron, Zinc, Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid), Vitamin B12, and Vitamin B3 (Niacin). The brand seeks to make nutritious rice accessible and affordable for households across Punjab.
Highlighting the role of fortification, Monojit Indra, Senior Practice Leader at TechnoServe and Program Lead, Millers for Nutrition Asia, said,
“India has achieved success in food production, but nutrition gaps remain. Fortified rice can transform health outcomes and complement the government’s fortified rice distribution efforts through retail channels.”
Adding to this, Dr. Vanie Sarda Thapar, gynaecologist and nutrition advocate, noted that fortified foods are one of the most effective ways to combat anaemia and malnutrition without changing dietary habits.
Mohit Gupta, CEO, Jai Maa Chhinmastika Rice Mills, said, “As millers, we hold a responsibility beyond business. With The Rice Pot, we aim to make nutrition simple, accessible, and affordable for all.”
Abhishek Shukla, Country Program Manager, Millers for Nutrition India, emphasized that empowering millers with tools, training, and market insights can help fortification reach every family.
Through such initiatives, Punjab is emerging as a frontrunner in advancing nutrition security and promoting fortified foods as a sustainable solution to hidden hunger.
