Mauritius has expressed interest in a long- term agreement with India for supply of food grains, particularly, rice for its food security.
During a recent visit to India, Mauritius State Trading Corporation's Chairman Takesh Luckho said that Mauritius which imports a large quantity of rice from India annually (around 55000 tonnes) is keen to have a long-term agreement.
As per reports, Luckho has said that Mauritius buys 250 tonnes of basmati rice and 8000 tonnes of non-basmati rice every quarter through open tender and when India banned the export of non-basmati rice, the gap was filled by Pakistan. However, Mauritius wants to engage with India for food security on a long-term basis.
This is though rice exporters have opined that Indian exporters prefer open tender and there is always room for government to government cooperation.
As per available data, Mauritius imported 63000 tonnes of rice in 2023-24, wherein Indian export share was 50000 tonnes and 55000 tonnes in 2024-25, wherein Indian export share was 42000 tonnes, and there is a projection of upward swing in the rice import by the Indian Ocean nation.
