Malnutrition remains a significant challenge for Burkina Faso
Thursday, 02 July, 2026, 15 : 00 PM [IST]
Burkina Faso, Africa
Burkina Faso marked World Food Safety Day 2026 under the theme, ‘From Food Safety to Nutrition: Keys to a Healthy Diet’, with strong multisectoral engagement and active community participation.

The country continues to face a double burden of malnutrition. On one hand, undernutrition remains a significant challenge, with 21.6 percent of children under five affected by stunting and more than 50 percent of women of reproductive age suffering from anaemia. On the other hand, obesity and noncommunicable diseases are emerging, particularly in urban areas.

Panel discussions highlighted the range of biological, chemical and physical hazards affecting the food chain, as well as the significant socio-economic impacts of foodborne illnesses. These exchanges underscored the importance of integrated approaches linking food safety and nutrition to address current and emerging public health challenges.

Scientific and community panels explored solutions for ensuring safe food, the link between food safety and nutrition, and the shared responsibility of consumers. Artistic performances (poetry, theatre, and sketches) were used to raise awareness among the general public. Practical demonstrations featured entrepreneurs and women food processors. Educational games and competitions, including the ‘Safe Food Challenge’, engaged young people and promoted interactive learning.

World Food Safety Day 2026 in Burkina Faso demonstrated a strong synergy between science, culture, and civic engagement, reinforcing the message that ‘we are what we eat’. The celebration reaffirmed the importance of safe and nutritious food as a foundation for public health, national vitality, and sustainable development.
