Mahindra unveils Farming 3.0 & gives away Samriddhi India Agri Awards

Mahindra & Mahindra’s Farm Equipment Sector, India’s leading tractor manufacturer, has unveiled Farming 3.0 and announced the winners of the seventh Mahindra Samriddhi India Agri Awards (MSIAA).

Farming 3.0 is a new era, which will be defined by the increased use of technology and innovation in farming, greater professionalism within the farming ecosystem, a growing consideration for the environment and higher-quality farm produce.

Instituted in 2011, the awards are bestowed upon farmers and institutions to recognise their noteworthy and purposeful contribution in the field of agriculture, the backbone of the Indian economy.

Agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh was the chief guest at the awards ceremony. The Mahindra Samriddhi Krishi Shiromani Samman (Lifetime Achievement Award) 2017 was conferred upon Virender Lal Chopra for his immense contribution to Indian agriculture.

He bagged the award for his contributions towards genetic and plant breeding, as he laid special focus on wheat, which is a major food grain to fulfil dietary requirements.

Anand Mahindra, executive chairman, Mahindra Group, said, “The awards are a part of our endeavour to felicitate farmers for their contribution to agriculture and drive positive changes in their lives and livelihoods.”

Pawan Goenka, managing director, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, said, “Farming 3.0 will be defined by a new generation of farmers, innovators, scientists and professionals who are seeking to balance productivity and economics with social and environmental considerations.”

“This age will feature technological innovations that will increase agricultural output, address growing environmental degradation and connect farmers directly to consumers, thereby delivering agri prosperity and enabling rural India to rise,” he added.

The first era focused on land reforms, through legislation that led to tenancy reform such as the abolition of the Zamindari system, abolition of intermediaries, the establishment of land ceilings and enablement of land consolidation.

Though the implementation of land reform in India has varied vastly across states, overall, these reforms have impacted 12.4 million tenants on 15.6 million acres of land.

The second epoch – Farming 2.0 – commencing in the mid-1960s, relied on high-yielding varieties of crops, fertilisers, multiple cropping and irrigation, to usher in India’s Green Revolution.

The first two stages ensured the country’s food security, while boosting farm incomes, which in turn has provided a fillip to the broader economy.

The two previous stages of progress of India’s agrarian sector – post-Independence in 1947 – can be termed as Farming 1.0 and Farming 2.0.

The Mahindra Samriddhi India Agri Awards initiative is an extension of Mahindra’s Samriddhi initiative which aims to enhance agricultural productivity through innovative farming technologies, thereby leading to an increase in rural prosperity.

Several Mahindra dealerships have been transformed into Samriddhi Centres, offering the farmer easy access to technological know-how, hybrid seeds, soil and irrigation water testing facilities, demo farms, finance and insurance and Internet updates, apart from sales and service of tractors and advanced implements.
