Kensing LLC has achieved a major milestone with the exclusive European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) authorization for its Sunvasterol sunflower phytosterols a naturally derived, clean-label, allergen-free, and non-GMO plant sterol ingredient developed for food and dietary supplement applications. This approval marks the first EFSA authorization for sunflower-based phytosterols, granting Kensing commercial exclusivity across Europe.
Developed at Kensing’s state-of-the-art facilities in Valencia and Talavera de la Reina, Spain, Sunvasterol is produced from an upcycled byproduct of sunflower oil, underscoring Kensing’s commitment to circular production and sustainability. Derived from sunflower oil distillates, these phytosterols offer formulators a sustainable alternative to traditional soy, pine, or rapeseed sterols, while maintaining proven efficacy in lowering cholesterol levels.
Backed by more than 140 scientific studies, phytosterols are known to reduce cholesterol by competing with dietary cholesterol absorption in the intestine, effectively lowering total and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by 7–12% within 2–3 weeks at daily intakes of 1.5–3 g. EFSA-approved health claims also support a minimum daily intake of 0.8 g to help maintain healthy cholesterol levels.
“This EFSA approval allows us to deliver a new, fully traceable, and sustainable source of non-GMO, allergen-free phytosterols,” said Serge Rogasik, CEO of Kensing. “Sunvasterol achieves the same cholesterol-lowering efficacy as traditional sterols while being completely disconnected from deforestation and traceability challenges.”
The approval follows the successful completion of a Novel Food application, which broadens the specification for sunflower sterols to reflect their natural composition and allows use in authorized food categories and dietary supplements. Under EFSA’s decision, Kensing holds exclusive authorization, meaning competitors will require Kensing’s consent or their own EFSA dossier to market similar sunflower sterol products in the EU.
Kensing’s global sunflower supply chain spans Spain, Argentina, and the United States, ensuring resilient production and scalability without tariff-sensitive dependencies. Sunvasterol formulation versatility enables use across a wide range of better-for-you products from spreads, yogurts, and dairy drinks to salad dressings and functional foods without altering taste, color, or texture. “It integrates seamlessly into foods and supplements with minimal sensory impact,” noted Alejandro Abad, Executive VP and General Manager Europe, Kensing.
Part of Kensing’s broader sunflower-based wellness portfolio, including Sun E Vitamin E, Sunvasterol strengthens the company’s leadership in naturally derived, heart-health ingredients.
