Karnataka’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIAL) garnered a significant milestone this mango season, exporting 921 metric tonnes of mangoes which is equal to 31.5 lakh fruits.
This feat was made possible through KIAL's improved cold chain infrastructure, streamlined cargo operations, and strong collaboration with farmers and exporters across the region. The figure marks a 12 per cent increase over last year’s exports. The mangoes were sourced from Karnataka’s mango belts and neighbouring regions.
Satyaki Raghunath, chief operating officer of Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), stated, The success of this mango season speaks of the collaborative efforts of our regulatory bodies, airline partners, cargo handlers, trade promotion councils, trade bodies, and farming communities. This proves the state’s growing global demand for Indian mangoes."
As per the State Mango Board estimates, the state cultivates 1.39 lakh hectares and produces an average of 11 lakh tonnes during a normal year.
Now, the record-breaking performance marks a significant boost for Karnataka’s horticulture and agri-export sector. Well-known varieties such as Alphonso, Banganapalli, and Kesar were among those sent abroad, reaching markets in Europe, the Middle East, the US, and South East Asia, said KIAL in its note.
Shipments reached 51 international destinations, with 19 new locations added to the network this year. The top five destinations were Dulles (IAD) in Virginia, Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) in Texas, San Francisco (SFO), Chicago (ORD), and Seattle (SEA), according to BIAL.
Mangoes are cultivated in the southern and central parts of Karnataka, including Tumkur, Channarayapatna, and Mandya. In fact, Srinivaspur in Kolar is referred to as the Mango City of India as over 63 species of mangoes are found here. These include Banganapalli, Mallika, Alphonso/Badami, Totapuri, Neelam, Raspuri, Malgova. Besides the state is well-known for the cultivation of Amlet variety, which is picked choice for pickles.
Early this year, the Union government had announced a minimum support price (MSP) for mangoes, bringing relief to thousands of farmers in Karnataka, who had been affected by crop loss and drastic fall in prices this year.
The Centre approved price of Rs 1,616 per quintal and allowed the state government to procure 2,50,000 metric tonnes of mangoes for this marketing year.
