India and The Netherlands have agreed to reinforce their strategic ties with particular focus on dairy among others sectors like defence and technology.
To this end, an Indo-Dutch Centre of Excellence on training in dairy will be opened at the Centre of Excellence for Animal Husbandry(CEAH) in Bengaluru. This follows Prime Minister Modi’s ongoing visit to The Netherlands.
Prime Minister Modi and the Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten signed a joint declaration between the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying of India and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature of The Netherlands, as well as the establishment of an Indo-Dutch Centre of Excellence on Training in Dairy in Bengaluru.
Both India and The Netherlands agreed to continue to explore cooperation in dairy and other allied agricultural sectors, including food processing.
The state dairy sector has also received Danish funding through the India-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership. Rather than direct financial grants to local milk unions, the Danish contribution focuses on technology transfers, agricultural expertise, and sustainable dairy management.
Key areas of Danish involvement and support include: Cattle Genetics and Breeding. Here Karnataka relies heavily on Danish cattle breeding expertise such as the integration of high-yield Danish Jersey genetics to improve the milk yield and quality of local herds.
The Center of Excellence on Dairy focuses on leveraging Danish agricultural technology to improve feed efficiency, minimise food waste, and support green, eco-friendly farming practices.
Considerable knowledge of exchange is needed in this sector. The Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science, alongside bodies like the National Dairy Development Board, frequently funds Indo-Danish scientific workshops to exchange researchers and share best practices in food safety, ingredient processing, and dairy management.
For direct financial subsidies, loans, and local dairy development grants, farmers and implementing agencies typically look to the Government of India's Rashtriya Gokul Mission, which aims to develop and conserve indigenous bovine breeds, enhance milk productivity, and make dairy farming more profitable for small and marginal farmers. The National Dairy Development Board spearheaded India’s massive "Operation Flood," which successfully transformed the nation into the world’s largest milk producer - the platform that supported revenue generation.
