Karnataka sanctions 84 FDA food safety wing posts

Karnataka government has approved sanction of 84 posts in the food safety wing of the Karnataka Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by the Karnataka Examinations Authority. This is through direct recruitment.
The government has now permitted to fill up the 84 vacancies in the department where 60 candidates are selected from the remaining cadre and the balance 24 candidates are from the Kalyana Karnataka Cadre.
This recruitment of 84 officers would strengthen the Food Safety Department. Accordingly, 200 posts were created in the Food Safety Wing, comprising 18 Designated Officers, 157 Food Safety Officers and 25 Junior Food Analysts. These posts were permitted to be filled through direct recruitment by the Direct Recruitment Cell.
Further, in the government letter cited that permission was granted to fill 22 posts through the Karnataka Examinations Authority, considering the large number of vacancies and administrative requirements. Therefore, permission was granted to fill the 84 posts, including the posts under the Kalyana Karnataka region, through the Karnataka Examinations Authority. This order is issued with the concurrence of the Finance Department conveyed through its note dated 09-07-2026.
The state has 210 sanctioned posts of Food Safety Officers. However, around half remained vacant in recent years affecting inspections, food sampling and enforcement drives across districts according to the officials.
The posts are to appoint seven designated officers. Here five are from the remaining cadre and the three from the Kalyana Karnataka Cadre taking the total posts to be filled as seven.
There was also a vacancy of 59 posts of food safety officers. Here 40 are filled from the remaining cadre and 19 from the Kalyana Karnataka Cadre.
In the category of Junior Food Analysts, there are 18 vacancies. Here 15 will be picked up from the remaining cadre and three from the Kalyana Karnataka Cadre.
Further, the government order also noted that the department has informed the Karnataka High Court, Kalaburagi bench through an affidavit that it would fill 200 posts after the Court sought a compliance report in a long pending recruitment case. The proposal also cited repeated direction from the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAi) to fill the regulatory posts at the earliest.
