Karnataka FSDA voices concern over food hygiene in Railway premises

The Karnataka FSDA (Food Safety and Drug Administration) after a special inspection drive in hotels and other food establishments in Railway premises. on August 20, voiced concern over food safety and hygiene.

With the  objective of inspecting the quality and safety of food, food storage practices, labelling and food handling practices in hotels and other food establishments in Railway premises, Karnataka FSDA said that during this drive, a total of 36 railway stations and inspected 112 food establishments at Bangalore (KSR), Yeshwanthpura, K.R. Puram, Yelahanka, Kolar, Mysore, Haveri, Udupi, Koppal, Gadag, Davanagere, Bagalkote, Karwar, Yadgiri, Berur and Kadur junction, Bellary, Hospet, Hubli and Mangalore were visited and 112 food establishments of railway pantry, railway hotel and food served on the train were inspected.

The following was observed
Vande Bharat train between Mangalore to Kerala and Hubli to Bangalore was maintained clean and hygiene.

There was suspected use of non-permitted colours in food products. Yellow colour was found to have been used in jalebi and pink colour in khoa peda. Expired Nandini curd and Dodla standardised milk packets were found at a railway station in Haveri district.

Unhygienic conditions were observed in a hotel food establishment at K.R. Puram Railway Station. At Mysuru Railway Station, idlis were found to be prepared using plastic material. In Mysore expired food items was found in the kitchen. Fungal growth was observed on onions and vegetables. Chutney was found to be stored in plastic buckets that were not suitable for food storage.

The railway authorities and concerned designated officers will be informed regarding the violations observed, and further legal action will be initiated against the food business operators who have violated the prescribed food safety requirements.
