Karnataka Food Safety and Drugs Administration (FSDA), has issued notices to 10 sweet manufacturing units and food business operators in Karnataka for alleged food safety violations, including unhygienic preparation and failure to obtain FSSAI licences or registrations. The development came following a special inspection drive conducted across Karnataka by the Food Safety Wing of the Department as per the directions of Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader in the wake of festival season, stated the communication note from the Karnataka FSDA. “During the drive, eighty sweet manufacturing and sales establishments across the state were inspected, in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Food Safety and Standards (Licencing and Registration) Regulations, 2011,” officials said. According to a statement by the Food Safety and Drugs Administration department, a total of a hundred and twenty-five food samples were collected from sweet manufacturing and sales establishments and sent to the respective government food laboratories for analysis to assess their quality and compliance with food safety standards. "During the inspection, it was observed that food preparation and storage areas were being maintained under unhygienic conditions, food handlers did not possess medical certificates, and FSSAI licences/registrations had not been obtained," it said. In this regard, notices have been issued to ten sweet manufacturing units/food business operators, and further legal action will be initiated in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Rules and Regulations framed thereunder in 2011, the department said. They added that inspections will be conducted continuously against sweet manufacturing and sales establishments violating food safety and quality standards, and stringent legal action will be taken as per the applicable rules.
