The J&K administration has banned the sale of loose paneer in the Union Territory citing public health concerns. As per media reports, the State Commissioner of Food Safety has issued an order in this regard directing the food businesses to stop manufacturing, sale, distribution, import, and transportation of loose paneer containing foreign or vegetable fat across the UT with immediate effect.
The decision was taken after multiple enforcement drives unearthed large consignments of paneer manufactured in other states being sold in the UT, which have been produced in unhygienic conditions.
The reports added that the consignments were also lacking proper billing, invoices and warranty declarations as per FSS Act.
During the enforcement drive, samples of the seized consignment were sent for a lab analysis in Ghaziabad and were found un-conforming with the relevant standards set by the FSSAI. The samples were found having the presence of Beta-Sitosterol, indicating vegetable or foreign fat used during the manufacturing of paneer.
The ban shall remain in force until further order. A warning has also been given to errant food businesses that strict action will be taken against the violators of the order.
