Ingredion, Holobiome, & Shiru forge AI-powered alliance for gut health innovation
Saturday, 21 March, 2026, 16 : 00 PM [IST]
Westchester, USA
In a significant move to accelerate innovation in the functional food space, Ingredion has announced a strategic partnership with biotechnology firms Holobiome and Shiru to develop next-generation gut-health ingredients. The collaboration aims to leverage artificial intelligence and microbiome science to identify and scale novel fiber-based solutions that go beyond traditional digestive support.

By utilising Shiru’s AI-powered "Flourish" platform, the partnership will screen vast databases of plant proteins and fibers to identify molecules with specific functional benefits. Holobiome, a leader in microbiome research, will then provide the biological validation, ensuring these ingredients effectively "feed" beneficial gut bacteria to improve overall human health, including potential impacts on the gut-brain axis.

The partnership marks a shift for Ingredion as it seeks to diversify its portfolio of starches and sweeteners with high-value bioactive ingredients. "The future of the food industry lies at the intersection of biology and technology," an Ingredion spokesperson stated. "By combining our manufacturing scale with Holobiome’s deep science and Shiru’s AI capabilities, we can bring targeted health solutions to market faster than ever before."

The primary focus of the initial development phase will be on "precision prebiotics"—fibers designed to support specific strains of beneficial bacteria rather than providing a generalized fiber boost. This level of customisation allows food and beverage manufacturers to make more science-backed claims regarding immunity, mood, and metabolic health.

In addition to health benefits, the collaboration emphasises sustainability. Shiru’s AI identifies plant-based alternatives that require fewer resources to produce, aligning with Ingredion’s long-term environmental goals.

As consumer interest in the "food-as-medicine" movement continues to surge, this trio of companies is positioned to redefine the pantry. By moving from accidental discovery to AI-driven design, the partnership aims to create a new category of ingredients that are as effective as they are sustainable, fundamentally changing how functional foods are formulated and consumed globally.
