India’s poultry industry, one of the fastest-growing segments in the country’s agribusiness sector, is increasingly turning its attention towards boosting domestic consumption rather than relying on exports.
Industry stakeholders point out that while India has the potential to become a leading exporter of poultry products, logistical barriers, quality certification norms, and inconsistent international demand have limited its export growth. As a result, producers are now strategising to expand local market penetration and cater to the rising urban and rural appetite for poultry products.
According to industry experts, India’s per capita poultry consumption, though growing steadily, remains significantly lower than global averages, presenting a vast untapped opportunity. With changing dietary preferences, growing income levels, and a rising health-conscious middle class, the domestic market is expected to witness robust demand in the coming years.
“Export markets are volatile and highly regulated, whereas the Indian consumer base is expanding consistently. Focusing on domestic value addition, branding, and cold-chain infrastructure can ensure sustainable growth for the sector,” said a senior representative from the Poultry Federation of India.
The industry is also witnessing technological interventions in feed formulation, biosecurity, and breeding, which are improving productivity and reducing costs. Companies are simultaneously working on ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook poultry products to tap into the convenience-driven urban segment.
With government support through schemes such as the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF), and a renewed focus on self-reliance (Atma Nirbharta), stakeholders believe India’s poultry sector is poised to emerge as a domestic growth engine, even as global export ambitions continue to evolve.
