Indian sports nutrition market powers into mainstream

Anurag More, Mumbai
Indian sports nutrition market is undergoing a significant transformation, evolving from a niche category catering primarily to bodybuilders into a mainstream wellness segment. Rising health awareness, expanding fitness culture, increasing participation in sports, and the growing influence of social media have collectively reshaped consumer behaviour, creating strong demand for scientifically formulated nutrition products.

According to an IMARC report, the Indian sports nutrition market was valued at US$1.91 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach US$3.35 billion by 2034, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.45 per cent between 2026 and 2034. The market's expansion is being supported by the rapid growth of gyms, fitness centres, sports academies and a new generation of health-conscious consumers seeking products that enhance performance, recovery and overall wellness.

Fitness culture expands consumer base
The sports nutrition industry is no longer limited to professional athletes or fitness enthusiasts. Working professionals, women embracing strength training, and older consumers focused on healthy ageing are increasingly incorporating protein supplements, recovery products and functional nutrition into their daily routines. The rise of digital fitness communities, celebrity endorsements and social media influencers has further accelerated product awareness, making sports nutrition an integral part of modern lifestyles.

According to Grand View Research's Horizon Databook, sports drinks accounted for the largest revenue share of 43.05 per cent in 2025 within the Indian sports nutrition market. The report segments the market into sports supplements, meal replacement products, sports drinks, sports foods and weight management products, highlighting sustained growth across all categories.

The Covid-19 pandemic also reshaped consumer priorities, shifting demand from purely performance-focused supplements toward products supporting immunity and overall health. Responding to this trend, brands have introduced formulations that combine sports nutrition with immune-supporting ingredients. MuscleBlaze's launch of Biozyme Immunity Whey exemplifies this evolving product strategy.

International brands continue to recognise India's growth potential. French nutritional supplement company Eric Favre entered the Indian market with a comprehensive sports nutrition portfolio while partnering with Hype Gym across Delhi-NCR and establishing its own training academy to strengthen consumer engagement.

From niche category to mainstream wellness
According to Vishnu Menon, Founder of Iron Asylum, the industry has witnessed a dramatic evolution over the past few years. "What was once a specialised category found only in select gym stores has become widely accessible through e-commerce and quick commerce platforms," he says. Consumers today are considerably more informed, carefully evaluating ingredient lists, dosage levels and scientific backing before making purchasing decisions. This increased scrutiny has raised expectations around transparency and product authenticity.

The expansion of online retail has improved accessibility while simultaneously increasing the need for stronger verification systems to combat counterfeit products entering the market.

Convenience, transparency shape consumer demand
Modern consumers increasingly expect sports nutrition products to integrate seamlessly into busy lifestyles. Ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages, convenient single-serving formats and simplified dosing are becoming key purchasing factors. Menon believes transparency has emerged as one of the strongest drivers of brand preference.

"Consumers want complete label disclosure, clinically supported ingredient dosages and clear information about what they're consuming," he explains. While affordability remains important, buyers are becoming more willing to invest in premium products that offer verified quality, reliable sourcing and scientific credibility.

Building trust through supply chain control
For Iron Asylum, differentiation extends beyond marketing. Menon attributes the company's positioning to its control over sourcing, formulation and distribution. As an official importer of international nutrition brands while simultaneously developing proprietary products under its ClearSupps portfolio, the company maintains end-to-end oversight of product quality.

Its flagship pre-workout product, Scarface, sold out its initial production run of 10,000 units within a week—an outcome Menon credits to addressing genuine gaps identified through direct interaction with consumers rather than simply following global trends.

Consumer feedback drives product development
Instead of relying solely on conventional market research, Iron Asylum places significant emphasis on real-world consumer behaviour. Customer conversations, retailer feedback, purchasing trends and repeat buying patterns provide valuable insights into unmet market needs.

According to Menon, products are developed only after identifying consistent consumer demand—whether for improved formulations, new flavours or underserved price segments. This practical approach enables the company to create products addressing specific market deficiencies rather than duplicating existing offerings.

Science-backed innovation becomes essential
As the market matures, research and formulation are becoming increasingly important differentiators. Menon stresses that successful innovation must be grounded in scientific evidence rather than marketing claims. Ingredients should be included at clinically effective dosages, while formulations must consider factors such as absorption, timing of consumption and suitability for Indian climatic conditions. Equally important is sourcing high-quality raw materials, since even well-designed formulations depend on ingredient purity and consistency.

Raising the bar on quality assurance
Quality assurance has become a defining feature of leading sports nutrition companies. Iron Asylum follows FSSAI Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements while also implementing third-party laboratory testing for every batch to verify nutritional claims, detect heavy metals and identify microbial contamination. Comprehensive documentation, batch traceability and strict storage protocols further strengthen product integrity, particularly given India's challenging climatic conditions. "Quality isn't a single checkpoint—it's something that has to be maintained throughout sourcing, manufacturing, transportation and distribution," Menon notes.

Local manufacturing strengthens competitiveness
Local manufacturing is emerging as an important strategic advantage for sports nutrition brands. By producing products domestically, companies gain greater control over costs, reduce dependence on imports and shorten product development timelines. More importantly, local formulation enables brands to design products tailored specifically to Indian consumer preferences rather than adapting imported solutions. Supply chain control also strengthens protection against counterfeit products by maintaining a verified chain of custody from manufacturing to retail shelves.

Sourcing challenges continue
Despite rapid market growth, sourcing premium-quality ingredients remains one of the industry's biggest challenges. Menon points to consistency in ingredient purity, rising costs, import duties, logistics delays and maintaining ingredient stability during transportation as ongoing concerns. Independent verification of supplier claims through third-party testing has become increasingly important as companies seek to maintain product quality while protecting consumer confidence.

Sports nutrition merges with mainstream f&b products
One of the most significant industry shifts is the convergence of sports nutrition with mainstream food and beverage products. Protein fortification and functional ingredients are now appearing in snacks, beverages and everyday food products, reflecting consumers' growing preference for foods delivering additional health benefits. Menon believes sports nutrition is gradually evolving into a broader philosophy centred on clinically validated ingredients, functional benefits and transparency—principles that consumers increasingly expect across all food categories.

Ready-to-drink products offer major growth opportunity
Among emerging categories, ready-to-drink protein beverages, functional drinks and performance foods represent some of the strongest growth opportunities. These formats address one of the industry's biggest challenges—consumer convenience—by making sports nutrition easier to incorporate into everyday life. Performance bars, protein beverages and functional snacks also broaden market appeal by attracting consumers who may never purchase traditional powdered supplements but remain interested in healthier food choices.

Future growth focused on trust
Looking ahead, Iron Asylum plans to strengthen its ClearSupps portfolio, deepen partnerships with global nutrition brands and continue expanding consumer education initiatives. The company also sees opportunities in RTD beverages and performance foods, although Menon emphasises that future expansion will remain driven by genuine consumer needs rather than temporary market trends.

The next decade
Over the coming decade, India's sports nutrition industry is expected to become increasingly sophisticated. Menon anticipates stronger regulatory oversight, greater consolidation around trusted brands and continued growth beyond athletic performance into broader wellness, recovery and preventive health. Local manufacturing, scientifically validated formulations and transparent supply chains are likely to become major competitive advantages as consumers continue demanding higher standards.

"The brands that succeed will be those that treat trust and quality as the product itself—not simply the packaging around it," Menon concludes.
